January brings the snow…

January 17, 2011

… makes our feet and fingers glow.”  In January, opportunities to ski, snowboard and sled in the California mountain snow abound.  Central Valley living has its perks, one of which is that we are indeed central to lots of family winter fun.

Nearest to Modesto and surrounding areas is the Leland High Sierra Snowplay area.  Those visiting the snow park will find two well-groomed areas for sledding: a kiddie hill area and a more adventurous large hill area.  Double and even triple riding is allowed on the kiddie hills, providing visitors with a true family photo-op!  The large hills have multiple lanes to choose from, each with their own level of excitement groomed in.  An oval course on-site is specifically for mini-snowmobile rides!  Children ages five to 12 weighing under 110 pounds — and for an additional fee — can jump on a mini-snowmobile and zip around the track!  This attraction operates only on weekends and holidays.

A bit further — but worth the drive — is a new feature at Sierra-at-Tahoe: Blizzard Mountain!  Children and adults alike will enjoy a full two-hours of tubing on two lanes.  The tubers are towed up the hill, resulting in maximum fun for minimal effort.  When the tubing ticket is up, shift over to the snow play area for the remainder of the day.  Visitors may bring their own toys, though free snow tools are available for use: snowball makers, snowbrick molds and snowman kits are all offered!

If the members of your family are true winter sports fans, resorts at higher elevations are flush with good snow.  Boreal Mountain Resort and Heavenly Lake Tahoe both offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.  The resorts’ Tahoe location affords visitors a classic winter vacation; snowmobiling excursions and helicopter tours unlike anything to be found in the lower elevations!  Closer yet is the Bear Valley Mountain resort, with over 1,200 acres of snow, 67 trails, an adaptive ski program and a great ski school.  With a deal like this one, why not plan a trip now?
