A Holiday Skating Party

December 21, 2010

Winter break.  We all look forward to it, yet once it arrives and we are standing amongst a playroom strewn with game pieces, discarded DVD cases, and empty snack wrappers once in the hands of the neighborhood’s six second graders, we begin to wonder what it was about break that we were excited for.

Ice skating is the perfect winter break activity.  A day of activity in brisk winter air will tire the munchkins out, giving you a chance to finally finish up those last-minute holiday preparations!

Dell’Osso Family Farm, located in Lathrop, CA and right off of I-5, has added an outdoor ice skating rink to its ever-growing Snow on the Farm park.  Bundle up for cold weather, and if you have a beginner skater, you may want to pack a change of clothes, as suggested by one of our reviewers.  There is a whole lot more going on at Dell’Osso Family Farm: check out Santa’s Village and Lights on the Farm when planning your Snow on the Farm excursion.

Winter Wonderland at the Stockton Arena (where the professional ice hockey team, The Stockton Thunder, play) opens its doors for public skating sessions two days this week.  Parents and caregivers will enjoy the bargain admission rate, which includes skate rental.  Hockey fans will enjoy this rare opportunity to skate where the pros skate.

Long Barn Ice Rink is off of CA-108, east of Sonora in the Sierra foothills.  This covered but open-air rink is rustic, evoking a country Christmas kind of feeling — perfect for thwarting post-holiday blues.  The rink accommodates quite a few skaters and has been a local favorite for 40 years.

If you’re at all heading into the San Francisco Bay area for any holiday celebrations or even a bit of shopping, take time to skate at one of the city’s outdoor ice skating rinks.  California’s version of Rockefeller Square is the Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square, where skaters zoom by a beautifully decorated, sky-scraping Christmas tree while shoppers rush by with their treasures.  The Embarcadero Center Ice Rink is located at Justin Herman Plaza, just across from the Ferry Building Market, where hungry skaters will find any number of warm beverages and holiday treats to fill an empty belly.

If cold toes and fingers isn’t your bag, remember that there’s an events calendar on our site, as well as many ways to search for an activity to fill your time during the winter break.

Don’t forget Oak Park Ice Arena in Stockton. http://www.oakparkicearena.com/Calendar.htm
for a link to the calendar. It’s close to Modesto and you don’t have to worry about icy roads.
